Brand You

Brand You – What’s Your Flavor?
By Terry P Carter

For the past few years with the advent of Web 2.0 marketing – social networking via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc., the concept of Branding Yourself online has been all the buzz.

You’ve surely heard the phrase, Brand You Incorporated by now. But just what does branding yourself really mean and how does this benefit the Attraction Marketer?

First, a word on mentors. Personally, I’m not interested in being any one’s mentor nor do I consider myself to modeling or following any mentors per-se lest, you lose your uniqueness.

A mentor is someone you wish to emulate. But, in attraction marketing, if you become a carbon copy of your mentor, then where’s the drawing power of YOU?

Sure, there’s certainly duplication, but you’re now just a copy cat of the one you emulated. And we all know a copy is never as good as the original. Given the choice, people will follow the original.

When you’re too much like your mentor, he or she will be easy to find for your prospects. In attraction marketing, you are focusing on building a network, a team. So you what you should be looking for are colleagues who complement your style, skill sets and who are a source of inspiration. A team with a variety of skill sets exudes more value than a group of clones. Clones are expendable. Just like stormtroopers in Star Wars. You want to be Darth Vader, not a run of the mill clone in white body armor.

What is your public identity – what are you wanting people to think when they think of you?

A lot of so called marketers throw out the term Brand You but fail to follow up with a concrete explanation of what that means beyond plastering your face out there on all social media networks.

Just like the ad agencies do for nationally recognized brands, you need to decide how you want to be thought of in the eyes of your prospects.

Are you the fun guy? Do you represent good times and goofiness?

Maybe you are the professional, serious, go-to guy that closes the deal.

Or maybe you see yourself as the spiritual enriching guru that helps others expand their self awareness.

Or are you the techno-teacher who can show you how to do those subtle but powerful marketing tactics that get results?

Ask your colleagues and friends how you come across to them if you don’t already know. Foremost, be yourself, and focus on your strong suits. Whatever you do, DO NOT try to be something you are not – it will be painfully obvious to others and you’ll only fool yourself and hurt your image and your business in the process.

You = ??? Your public identity. Discover what that is and keep it in mind when you do your marketing. Do your videos or other marketing content reinforce your identity or confuse people as to who you are? Whether or not you like it, you will be labeled in the minds of others as the fill-in-the-blank guy or girl. But by being conscious of this fact, you can project with intent how you want to be seen by others.
